Anima, Aura, Breath and Psyche: Mundane Magic Signup
(A note appears on the bulletin board, in neatly handwritten print:)
To my fellow Editors:
It is a fact of supreme importance to me that I am still capable of the feats of evocation that I became capable of on Mundus. I am both curious to know if others could learn them as I did, and know more than one person for whom it would be of practical use in self defense and the protection of others.
For these reasons, I am offering to teach the practice of arcane magic as it is taught on Mundus to anyone capable of using it with full awareness of the risks.
I would like to meet a week from tomorrow, on the 16th, in the Changing Room - hopefully as a garden. If you are interested, sign below. If you have any questions, leave them.

1: I’ve used my Arcane Grasp spell extensively to reach what my hands cannot, and just tested my ability to scribe effective runic circles, raise personal shielding and warding, and conjure elfshot, fire, ice, and lightning. All of these powers survived my awakening in the stacks intact.
2: Apart from the obvious danger of starting a fire or electrocution from conjuring same, spells are taxing and exhausting to cast, like strenuous exercise. And like strenuous exercise, if you do it without preparation you’re liable to stretch yourself too far and suffer injury.
3: Mundus is the world and planet that I was drawn to from my 2047 AD Earth under circumstances I have so far twice failed to explain from people from earlier eras. One day I will figure out how to explain it. It is similar to my 16th century earth - the Middle Ages dying as the Renaissance struggles to be born - save for the active intervention of beneficent gods, the presence of monsters, and the presence of an energy that allows it’s people to learn and practice what for the sake of argument I have called magic.
4: I will start with the theoretical underpinnings and with the necessary breathing and visualization exercises and work my way up from there. I suspect it will take two or three lessons before my students casting their first spell, the test of lighting a candle.

1. Understood. I retain my abilities as well. I wouldn't call it magic, but I guess you might call it earth magic?
2. Understood. Glad it isn't something like having to put your soul at risk.
[ His first two questions were answered more than sufficiently. Hikaru's answer to his third question leaves him baffled. Not from the content necessarily, but from the year. 2047 AD? What's an AD? It's 41 AC in his own world and so he has a suspicion that Hikaru might consider Wreck's world to be from an earlier era. Still, his world has its own "magic" system. ]
3. I think I understand. The magic you use isn't something you can use innately. You rely on that energy you mentioned to allow you to use magic. Ordinarily, without that energy you wouldn't be able to use magic, but here, there's something that works as a supplement which allows you to use your magic. Is that correct?
4. Understood, but I have an additional question. I'm still interested, and I don't think my earth "magic" will give me an edge in learning quickly. But, how long do you think it would take to be able to use arcane magic defensively? Since you think it might take several lessons to light a candle.

1: Without seeing them in action I couldn’t say, but they may draw on similar energies and principles.
2: There are shortcuts to power that do carry those risks, but in the immortal words of Adam “Knight Owl” Young, they are the tools of the enemy which we do not need and shall not use.
3: I’ll go into more detail in the lessons, but the term used by Mundane thaumaturges is Pneuma - a word cognate with Breath, Ruach, Mana, Prana, Chi. It is present in Mundus’ atmosphere, and apparently this one, and we breathe it in, store it up, and with practice we can deliberately exhale it.
4: Most of the difficulty is in learning the basics. Once a student can shape and exhale Pneuma at the same time I expect rapid progress from there.

Everything else makes sense, including the Pneuma essence. At least I think it does anyway.
But the whole shortcut thing? That's fine with me. I'm a patient guy, and even if this doesn't work for me, I still have my own skillset. But there are a lot of curious people here, and they might go snooping if you tell them there's a shortcut. Especially if they're impatient.
How did you even find out that kind of shortcut exists?

Usually you need to channel and shape energy stored in your body to do it, the same energy a competent fighter or athlete uses to move their muscles. This energy has many names; I call it "Breath."

Greetings, Hikaru Aozora. I am quite interested in your offer. That being said, how can someone tell if they have any sort of potential in that sense?
I know I do have some basic abilities but I'm not exactly 'gifted'. I will certainly attend, though.

I have practiced my Spirit Sight. I will be able to see the strength and affinity of your Aura, and possibly to guess how much Breath you can store and meaningfully use. If you're here, you should be accumulating some just from respiration.

“” is simply a glyph (“kanji” is the technical term) for my first name, to be read as “Hikaru” in my case. Ask me about it later, as speaking and writing in a second language is useful for a mage.
As for your capacity, breath is not quite the same thing as Breath (or more properly Pneuma, or a dozen other terms related to breathing), but this is better demonstrated than explained.
